Formerly known as the Illinois High School Art Exhibition (IHSAE) and General Exhibition.

The Northern Exhibition is one of Illinois’ largest and most influential student art exhibitions. This truly unique show celebrates artistic achievement and provides talented young artists with opportunities to showcase their artwork and compete at a state level.

Student artwork will be judged by category and prizes will be awarded for the top entries in each of the 8 categories: Drawing, Painting, Photography, Design, Mixed Media, Ceramics, Sculpture, and also Time Arts.

Why should students participate in this show?

How is the show being altered for the 2021 exhibition series? (subject to changes)

  • The 2021 show will include the same award recognitions as past years

  • The submission process will be the same, but the judging process will be conducted virtually.

  • Awards will be presented virtually to students in some way over a 2-week period in Late-March 2021

Artwork Submission, Selection, and Notification Process

SUBJECT TO CHANGE Artwork Submission ArtConnectED uses the SlideRoom digital platform for all participating schools to upload their images. The SlideRoom service is paid for using your school's registration cost. Each school self-selects and submits up to 6 artworks total. These 6 artworks are categorized into the following 8 categories: Drawing, Painting, Mixed Media, Design, Photography, Pottery, Sculpture, and Time Arts. ArtConnectED understands that not every school produces artwork in all 8 categories. However, we maintain that schools can and do produce artwork in at least 5 of our 8 established categories, and may be submitted in any combination. Artwork Selection Not all artwork will be selected for display. Only 5 artworks will be displayed at the exhibition, 6 if your school submits Time Arts works. Notification Process School Liaisons will be notified via email of the specific artworks accepted for display in the Northern Regional Exhibition. All selected artworks will need to meet the guidelines in order to be compatible with our virtual gallery. ArtConnectED utilizes Mailchimp to send out their emails and updates. If you are not receiving our emails, please check your junk mail folder and then with your IT department regarding this service.

Preparing Artwork for the Exhibition and e-Delivery

SUBJECT TO CHANGE Artwork Prep Work and e-Delivery Artwork selected for exhibition must be submitted according to the guidelines or your school's artwork may not be displayed. Participating schools will receive all info regarding artwork and exhibition guidelines via email.It is the responsibility of each school’s Liaison to oversee that all artwork meets the exhibition guidelines. The Northern Exhibition has set expectations for its participants and it is essential that all information be uniform and consistent.

Exhibition Day, Reception, and Awards Information

Awards Information The Northern Exhibition offers participating students a wide range of awards aimed at recognizing artistic excellence. ArtConnectED will award in all 8 categories for Best in Show, Gold, Silver, Bronze and Honorable mention, as well as ArtConnectED Visionary Award(s). Exhibition and Awards Reception The exhibition and awards presentation will be held virtually in 2021. More information will be provided regarding this event in the coming weeks but is expected to be held virtually over a 2 week period in Late-March.

Show Takedown & Artwork Pickup

Since the exhibition will be conducted virtually in 2021, no artwork will be taken down or be needing pickup.

3rd Friday Information

Information regarding 3rd Friday and any other opportunities for student artwork to be viewed by the public is TBD. Announcements will be made when info is finalized.

College Fair and Vendor Expo

The College Fair and Vendor Expo are being evaluated for inclusion in the 2021 event series. If possible, virtual events will be provided. In any event, this information is TBD and will be announced via social media and emails with teachers.
