Formerly known as the Illinois High School Art Exhibition (IHSAE) and General Exhibition.

The Northern Exhibition is one of Illinois’ largest and most influential student art exhibitions. This truly unique show celebrates artistic achievement and provides talented young artists with opportunities to showcase their artwork and compete at a state level.

Student artwork will be judged by category and prizes will be awarded for the top entries in each of the 8 categories: Drawing, Painting, Photography, Design, Mixed Media, Ceramics, Sculpture, and also Time Arts.

Why should students participate in this show?

  • Artwork is displayed in a designed virtual art gallery for 2020 with public access to thousands of people!

  • Opportunities for awards and prizes

  • Connect with College Representatives from wonderful arts programs across the country

  • Test out new arts materials and techniques with vendors and connect with arts and creative companies

  • Network with hundreds of talented student artists from dozens of schools and districts in Illinois

  • Gain recognition through exposure to thousands of guests and patrons of the arts

How is the show being altered for the 2021 exhibition series? (subject to changes)

  • The 2021 show will include the same award recognitions as past years

  • The submission process will be the same, but the judging process will be conducted virtually.

  • Awards will be presented virtually to students in some way over a 2-week period in Late-March 2021

Artwork Submission and Uploading

SUBJECT TO CHANGE Submission Guidelines Each school may submit up to 5 artworks (though 6 artworks may be submitted if including a ime-arts submission). These artworks may come from the following 7 categories:

  • Drawing
  • Painting
  • Mixed/Alternative Media
  • Photography
  • Design
  • Sculpture
  • Pottery
  • Time Arts
Uploading Guidelines
  • Upload your art works to SlideRoom via the link included in your welcome email.
  • Photos of artwork should be high-quality, in focus, and closely cropped.
  • Please title each piece of artwork as follows: schoolname_category_studentlastname,firstname

Example: nileswest_mixedmedia_smith,johnny

  • Please check with the student to ensure their preferred name be listed.

Exhibition Day, Reception, and Awards Information

Exhibition and reception information is being finalized and will be posted and sent out when established. Northern Regional Exhibition Awards In addition to the other awards and scholarships being awarded on the same day, the Northern Regional Exhibition Awards include special recognition awards that will be monetarily based and are structured as follows:

  • Visionary Award
  • Best in Show
  • Gold
  • Silver
  • Bronze
  • Honorable Mention

Artwork Review and Notification Process

Artwork Review Completed school artwork submissions will be reviewed by a panel of judges selected by the ArtConnectED judging coordinator. Notification Process Teacher liaisons will be notified via the email and address they provided in the SlideRoom portal by ArtConnectED. Notification of Artwork Inclusion in Exhibition While every artwork from each school's submission is considered, not every artwork will be chosen for display.ArtConnectED will notify the liaison teacher for each school to inform them which works from their school will be included for display in the exhibition.
